We are a Black Greek Sorority-Fraternity wedding photographers and bridal makeup artist. While covering Black Greek Weddings, we have learned the traditions of African American Sorority and Fraternities are rich: including but not limited to the Divine 9: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity. We have photographed a great deal of Omega Psi Phi /Que Dog weddings and Alpha Kappa Alpha weddings. African American sororities and fraternities hold a significant place in the cultural tapestry of the Black community, carrying with them a rich history of traditions and values. When members of these organizations come together in celebration of love and union, their weddings become a testament to the unity, strength, and camaraderie.
One of the most notable elements of an African American sorority or fraternity wedding is the display of pride and unity. The weddings feature stoles, sometimes sashes, hand signals and colors of the respective organizations. This not only reflects the couple’s dedication to their fraternity or sorority but also serves as a homage to the shared values and bonds within the community.
Another prominent tradition is the incorporation of specific ceremonial steps or rituals during the wedding proceedings. These can include special dances or performances, recitations of meaningful poems or quotes, or the singing of traditional songs. Such gestures serve to honor the heritage of the organizations and reinforce the sense of belonging and togetherness within the African American community.
The Devine nine weddings are always fun, they stroll every wedding like it’s the last wedding they are attending. All the weddings we have photographed for these gentlemen are usually well dressed, full of energy and bring a certain je n’ais se quoi to each wedding. We look forward to their weddings because of the energy, the Que Dog hooks, and the body of brotherhood.
Moreover, the involvement of fellow sorority and fraternity members is a common practice. They often come together to form an integral part of the wedding procession, with roles ranging from bridesmaids and groomsmen to ushers and honorary guests. This participation not only highlights the strong support network within these organizations but also underscores the importance of solidarity and kinship in the couple’s journey.
Alpha Kappa Alphas ladies are not to be outdone in their strolling, as you can see from the photographs above. These sisters are generally tight-knit and typically love to be with their sisters and they tend to make me work hard because they want their memories fully captured. We love Delta Sigma Theta Sorority weddings primarily for their Delta Sweet Heart Song. It is always soulful to listen to these ladies sing and honor their sister-bide at weddings.
Ultimately, an African American sorority or fraternity wedding is a beautiful blend of cherished customs, shared values, and a celebration of love that resonates deeply within the community. By infusing these meaningful traditions into their special day, couples not only pay homage to their respective organizations but also create a heartfelt and unforgettable experience for themselves and their guests.
