How to Photograph Wedding Rings
As a Harrisburg and Philadelphia wedding photographer, I want to write here about the art of capturing the wedding rings. Here we examine in detail “How to Photograph Wedding Rings.” We believe a great ring shot is paramount to the wedding day. Many may not believe that the wedding ring photo is an important photograph but, allow me to convince you otherwise. Simply put, the ring in western culture is a symbolic of commitment and love. Additionally, a great deal of money is typically spent on said ring, therefore as a photographers, we believe that is essential to capture beautiful wedding ring pictures. Also, among the many details that contribute to the visual narrative of a wedding, the photographs of the wedding rings hold a special place. Crafting amazing wedding ring pictures requires a keen eye for detail, a creative mindset, and a deep understanding of the significance these symbols hold for the couple.
LIGHTING THE WEDDING RING
To begin with, lighting plays a pivotal role in elevating the allure of wedding ring photographs. Natural light, when harnessed correctly, can enhance the sparkle and intricacies of the rings. Consider shooting during the golden hour – the soft, warm tones of the setting or rising sun create a magical ambiance that complements the sentiment of the occasion. Alternatively, experiment with diffused light video light. Over all we use either video light or natural light. We tend to feather the natural light or video light by turning the stones slightly away from the natural (window) light or shine the video light straight down or from the side. We never flat light the stones.

LENS CHOICE FOR WEDDING RINGS
We keep it simple, for close up shots we use a Nikon 105mm macro lens, 99% of our ring shots is taken with the 105mm macro. For wide context shots/candid ring shots we use a wide angle lens, anywhere from 24-35mm. One of the reasons for the wide angles is because they will focus closer to the subject than a telephoto.
CONTEXT: WEDDING RING PHOTOGRAPHS
In addition to lighting, the choice of background can significantly impact the overall aesthetic of the ring photographs. We tend to opt for backdrops that are meaningful to the couple, such as incorporating elements from the wedding venue, their personal life, or selecting textures that complement the style of the rings. This adds a personal touch and also weaves the rings into the broader narrative of the couple’s special day. For example, the groom had this Superman figurine which was part of his collection of Superheroes, so I added the engagement ring and created the photograph below.
Additionally, this ring shot was made in Jamaica during one of our destination weddings. We used Jamaican coins to add context to the ring shot.
COMPOSITION
Composition is another key factor in capturing stunning wedding ring pictures. Experiment with angles and perspectives to showcase the rings in a unique and visually appealing manner. Close-up shots that highlight the intricate details of the rings, alongside wider shots that place the rings within the context of the couple’s hands or the wedding environment, contribute to a well-rounded collection of ring photographs. We like to use the rule of thirds in a lot of our ring shots as well as negative space.

CANDID WEDDING RING SHOTS
Timing is crucial when photographing wedding rings. Seize the opportune moments, such as when the couple is exchanging vows or during other intimate moments throughout the day. Candid shots that capture the rings in the midst of genuine emotion provide a timeless and authentic representation of the couple’s love story.
Furthermore, paying attention to the styling of the rings can make a significant difference in the overall impact of the photographs. Work closely with the couple to understand the unique features of their rings, whether it be intricate engravings, special gemstones, or a distinctive design. Highlighting these details in the photographs not only adds a layer of storytelling but also emphasizes the individuality of the couple’s commitment.
POST PROCESSING WEDDING BANDS
Post-processing should not be overlooked in the quest for amazing wedding ring pictures. Fine-tune the images to enhance color, contrast, and sharpness, ensuring that the rings remain the focal point. Striking a balance between natural beauty and subtle enhancements contributes to a polished and visually pleasing final result. We like high contrast, saturated colors, “over sharpened” and lots of texture and clarity on our ring shots.
In conclusion, the art of capturing amazing wedding ring pictures lies in the harmonious blend of lighting, background, composition, timing, styling, and post-processing. By approaching each ring photograph with intention and creativity, a wedding photographer can immortalize the symbol of commitment in a way that resonates with the unique love story of the couple.
